Mr. Bennett was the father of Mrs. Ed Tew of this village. He was 61 years of age, had lived on the farm where he died 30 years, and was considered one of Berlin's best-to-do and most influential farmers. He leaves a wife and 3 grown children." Per undated IONIA newspaper obituary: "Bennett. - Miles Bennett was born in the state of New York, Oct. 6, 1839; died at his home in Berlin, Ionia Co., Michigan, May 12, 1900, being in the 61st year. He came to Michigan in the spring of 1866 and has lived ever since in the Township of Berlin. He was married to Miss Matilda Bradt Dec. 17, 1868. To this union were given two sons and one daughter. The wife and children survive him. In 1862, he enlisted in the Civil War and bravely served his country until the close of the conflict. He was always at the front, was engaged in one hundred and twenty-five battles and skirmishes. His death was largely due to a wound in the neck that affected the spine. He suffered much for three weeks. In 1886, he enlisted in the army of the Lord, and united with the Wesleyan Methodist church at East Berlin, and was a true and faithful member until death. One of the chief characteristics of Brother Bennett was that he was a strong supporter of the gospel, financially. Another strong pillar is gone. The church with the family mourn. The funeral services were held at the church on Monday, May 14, at 10:30 A. M., conducted by the writer, assisted by the Rev. M. J. Badder, of Clarksville. Text, II Timothy 4: 6, 8. - J. F.
