The girl complained of feeling ill Sunday and was taken to the hospital Tuesday. There are three other children in the family." Per unnamed, undated 1941 newspaper article: "Berlin Township Girl Is Dead of Paralysis Illness - Nine-year-old Mary Jean Bennett, daughter of Mr and Mrs Seigel Bennett, of Berlin township, was dead today only five days after she was admitted to Blodgett hospital at Grand Rapids where it was said she was suffering from infantile paralysis. It was the first case of infantile paralysis reported in Ionia county or at Blodgett hospital for several months. The child became ill last Saturday, August 11, and was transferred to Blodgett hospital Tuesday. Wednesday evening at 9:40 o'clock she died. Surviving are the parents, Mr and Mrs Seigel Bennett, a sister, Margaret Jean, 9, two brothers, Richard, 5, and William Vernon, 3, and grandparents, Mrs Vern Simmons and William Bennett, both of Berlin township. Private funeral services in accordance with state health regulations are to be held from the home Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock with interment at Balcom cemetery." Per undated, unnamed newspaper article, 1941: "MARY JANE BENNETT - Private funeral services were conducted from the home in Berlin township Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock for Mary Jane Bennett, 7, who died Wednesday evening at Blodgett hospital in Grand Rapids, of infantile paralysis. Rev. John Youngs officiated and interment was at Balcom cemetery. Bearers were four uncles, Miles Bennett, Harold Bennett, Harold Simmons, and Alden Simmons."
