Per IONIA SENTINEL STANDARD, December 30, 1920: "Obituary - Niles Bennett was born in LeRoy, N.Y., October, 1839 and died at his home in Berlin township, Ionia county Michigan, December 20, 1920, aged 81 years. At the age of 18 he enlisted and served in the Civil war until honorably discharged because of wounds. In 1869 he was married to Mary Ann Coats. To this union was born a son, Frank, who died just three months before his father. After his marriage he settled on the farm where he died, having lived there 55 years. In 1882 he was married again to Ann Myers. To them was born a son, Almond. Mr. Bennett was one of a family of 10 children, nine boys and one girl. There were two pairs of twins. He and his twin brother were especially attached to each other. They bought a farm together and always worked together. This brother died May 12, 1900. Five brothers settled here in the early days and lived happily together. One brother survives him, Eugene of LaSalle, N.Y. He also leaves his wife and son, seven nieces, nine nephews besides other relatives and many friends. His health has been failing during the past year but he was able to be about until a week ago Sunday when he suffered a stroke of apoplexy from which he did not rally. The entire community mourns the passing of a man who had lived with us so many years. The funeral services were held at the Wesleyan church December 22, Rev. B. A. Hammond officiating. Burial was made in Balcom cemetery."
