Bennett passed peacefully away on Saturday evening, Feb. 11th. He was born at Milo, Yates county, New York, on June 28th, 1833, and would have been 78 years of age next June. He was one of the earlier settlers in Orange township, driving here from York state, reaching the end of his journey on Thanksgiving day, 1858. He settled on the farm now owned by Wm. T. Hinds, five miles south of this city, and lived there for a number of years, after which he moved to Ionia, where he practiced as a veterinary surgeon until three years ago. He is survived by a widow and four daughters; Mrs. C. W. Stilson and Miss Lotta of this city, and Mrs. A. P. Crell of Grand Rapids and Mrs. Seymour J. Barkwell of Greenville. The funeral was held a the home on Yeomans St. on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev. M. M. Callen of the M. E. church officiating. Interment in Balcom cemetery. Subsequent Publication: Dr. Nemiah Bennett, well known pioneer and for many years a veterinary, passed peacefully away Saturday evening, Feb. 11, at his home on Yeomans St., after years of suffering. Dr. Bennett was a man of wide acquaintance, having a large practice throughout the surrounding country and in the city. He was of a kind, friendly disposition, which made him many friends who will mourn his death. Dr. Bennett was born in Milo, Yates Co., N.Y. on June 28, 1833, coming to Michigan in ’58, driving the entire distance. He settled on what is now the William Hinds farm with his parents. In 1864 he married Miss Sarah West of Orange. Four children were born to them and all survive. He was a sterling democrat, always taking a great interest in politics though never holding office. He was a kind and loving father in his home, where he will be greatly missed, and by his near neighbors, by whom he was highly esteemed. Although a terrible sufferer for three years, he was always bright and hopeful, always looking on the bright side and thinking he would soon be better. His wonderful patience in his long suffering was remarked upon by all the many friends who visited him in his last illness. The funeral services were held at his home on Yeomans St. Rev. Callen officiated and Mrs. G. M. Phelps and Mrs. Thane Benedict sang. The remains were placed in Balcom cemetery. Card of Thanks: We desire to thank the neighbors and friends who were so kind to our husband and father during his long illness, and so kind to us in our bereavement; and also for the beautiful flowers sent by friends and societies. Your sympathy was a great comfort in our sorrow.
