Bennett, 84, of Ionia passed from this life into Heaven at 6:48 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, after a short illness. Born to James and Margaret (Hoerner) Bennett on March 19, 1931, he was the second son of six children and lived his entire life in the Ionia area. On July 15, 1951, he married the love of his life, Wanda Lou (Monie) Flanders in Ionia; they celebrated 64 years together. George is remembered as a wonderful, fun-loving man and was adored by all his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he spent many happy, active days with them. He was a man of integrity, inner strength, and folk wisdom. With a tendency toward joking, he enjoyed, and was good at, imitating the voices, accents, and mannerisms of others, both human and animal. Eternally positive and good-natured even to the end, he loved nature and the outdoors. Camping, fishing, and bird-watching were favorite activities, and he was on a first-name basis with neighborhood squirrels and birds. Always a hard and dependable worker, George began his employment at an early age as a farm laborer. He was able to get a job at Grand Valley Chair Company at the tender age of 16, by fudging on his age, and went on to become a foreman there. After the company closed, he worked for a time at Ionia Fire Department but finished his work career with many years a supervisor at Brown Corporation, retiring in 1995. George was predeceased by his parents, a son Kim Bennett, brothers James Bennett and Chuck Bennett and sister, Clarabelle Hatt. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Wanda Lou (Monie) Bennett, son Kirk (Charlotte) Bennett of Arizona, daughter Kelly Mendez of Grand Ledge; grandchildren, Derek Bennett, Jason (Lexi) Bennett, Felix (Jenny Fais) Mendez, KJ (Kelly) Bennett, Dan (Brittany) Bennett, Jessie (Luke) Cassel, Ricky Mendez and Michael Mendez; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; brothers Walter (Barbara) Bennett and Bob (Pat) Bennett, brother-in-law Joseph (Sally) Flanders, Aunt Barbara Raglin and many nieces, nephews, and good friends. A celebration of the life of George Bennett will be held at the Lake Funeral Home Ionia on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at 2 p.m. with visitation for an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the wishes of the family. A special word of appreciation goes out to Ionia Area/Sparrow Hospice, whose caring attention and compassion were a blessing beyond measure to George and his family.
