Bennett, 72, of Ionia, died Wednesday at St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born on January 29, 1921 in Carson City, the son of Albert D. and Minnie Urie Bennett, and came to Ionia as a child. He was a graduate of Ionia High School. He married the former Dorothy Nielson on March 2, 1946 in Ionia and she survives. He was a Veteran of World War II, receiving the Purple Heart and several other medals of commendation while serving in the European Theatre. He was employed at Standard Lumber for 37 years as a yardman-truck driver, retiring in 1983. Surviving are his wife Dorothy; two daughters, Mary Bennett and Susan DenHouten, both of Ionia; six grandchildren; one great grandson; two sisters, Hazel Hart of Hastings and Nancy Davis of Ionia; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Albert V. Bennett, on February 19, 1979; five sisters, Ruth Gaut, Wilma Whorley, Bettie Howard, Joan Melchert, Donabelle Matthews and three brothers, James, Ward and Fred Bennett. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday from Myers Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Ralph B. Barton of the Walker Bible Church officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
