S. and H. F. Scott, was born in the town of Wilna, N. Y., March 9, 1856. When only a year old her parents sought a home in the West, going to Wisconsin, making however only a short stay, coming then to Michigan and settling on a farm in Lebanon township, Clinton county. It was while living on the farm she met and married John W. Bennett, April 28, 1875. After a time Mr. Bennett decided to locate in Hubbardston and in 1899 she joined him and since then has made Hubbardston her home where her life went out in the quiet hours of Sunday morning, August 3, 1913. While yet a girl at home she was converted in the Congregational church at Hubbardston and united with that body to remain faithful to it until her death. Four children came to gladden her life, two boys living on farms near the village, two daughters, one dying in infancy, the other, Helen, living to be her comfort and constant companion during her last illness. The serious illness and death of Mrs. Bennett’s mother about a year ago and the constant care she was privileged to give her, seriously undermined her strength, until in the winter it became apparent to all her friends that her life was but a question of a few months at most and on the date mentioned she fell asleep while reading in the early morning, a custom she had acquired to while away the tedium of the night that she might let others rest, thinking of their comfort even in the hour of death. She leaves to mourn her loss the three children mentioned, the husband of her youth and a host of friends, whom she had endeared to herself by her sweet womanly ways. Mrs. Bennett was a woman of distinct home loving instincts and her home was her throne and yet she found time to mingle in the various activities of the village. She was a charter member of the Lady Maccabees, a member of the Eastern Star and of the Women’s Relief Corps, in all of which she gave efficient service, holding positions of trust in them all, visiting the meeting of the Relief Corps the Saturday before her death. Her funeral was held at her late home in Hubbardston, in charge of Rev. W. W. Chatfield and her body was laid to rest in the Eastside cemetery. The floral offerings were plentiful; each society to which she belonged, laying a tribute of their esteem on her casket.
