William Maxwell Bensinger, 80, of Ionia passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 in 
Greenville.

He was born Dec. 9, 1921, the son of William and Emma (Piper) Bensinger.  He 
married Mary Wagner on July 18, 1986.

He was a World War II veteran, a Prisoner of War in an German Prison Camp and 
recipient of the prestigious Purple Heart.  He was sheriff of Ionia County from 
1976-1984, a member of the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association, Shiloh Community 
Church and Lions Club of Ionia, where he was past president.

He is survived by loving wife, Mary Bensinger of Ionia; sons, Gary (Gretchen) 
Bensinger of Alpena and William “Bill” (Debbie) Bensinger of Norwalk, Ohio; 
daughters, Michelle Bensinger of Ionia and Melissa Bensinger of Ionia; brother, 
Glenn (Irene) Bensinger of Charlevoix; sister, Kathryn Jackson of Flint; 
grandchildren, Gretchen Miller, Greg Bensinger, Brent Bensinger and Billie Jo 
Kilbride; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Dorothy Risser; and brother, 
Ed Bensinger.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Friday at Shiloh Community Church with 
Rev. Kendall Harger officiating.  Visitation is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 
8:30 p.m., Thursday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.

Anyone wishing may make a memorial contribution to Ionia Lions Club, Ionia 
County Commission on Aging, Ionia County United Way, Shiloh Community Church, 
First Christian Church or a charity of choice.  Envelopes are available at the 
funeral home.
