George Benton was born near Rome in Madison county, N.Y., Sept. 18, 1834. In 1850 he moved to Otisco, Ionia county, Michigan, with his parents and settled on a new farm, cleared and improved it where his mother and father both died soon after moving there, leaving five boys to finish improving the farm. He was married on Sept. 25, 1859 to Miss Martha Brink of the same place. He enlisted in Co. B, 25th Mich. Inf., August 11, 1862 and was mustered out with his regiment Aug. 24, 1865. [Transcriber's Note: I don’t know what “Zone” means, but this is typed as it appeared in the obituary.] Mr. Benton was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church in Grand Ledge and was always found true to his convictions never faltering or swerving from the path of duty. he and his wife joined the Adventist church 50 years ago. He died on Oct. 22, 1918 at the ripe old age of 84 years, 1 months and 4 days. He was well liked in the community where he lived and all who had the privilege of his acquaintance will feel that a good man has fallen at his post and a friend has taken his departure from their midst. The Benton homestead is now the Peter Wack farm.
