Berndt, age 93 of Big Bay, died Tuesday afternoon, October 24, 2006 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. Mr. Berndt was born on May 12, 1913 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to the late Louis and Ada (White) Berndt. He was a graduate of Saranac High School in Saranac, Michigan. He served his country in the Seabees during World War II in Okinawa and the Guadalcanal. After the war, he became proprietor of Emery’s Auto Sales and Service in Ionia. Emerson lived in Big Bay for over 30 years and was a member of Community Presbyterian Church. He was a life master of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by a daughter, Louise Berndt; granddaughter, Eleanora Rosin; a sister, Alma Cahoon; also nieces, Jean Burton and Alaina Trout. His wife, Gertrude Morris Berndt preceded him in death in 2002. Funeral services will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church in Big Bay on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Payne officiating. Burial will take place in the Powell Township Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Mr. Berndt’s memory to the Yellow Dog Watershed Conservancy, Big Bay, MI 49808.
