He was an excellent citizen and a grand old man. His passing leaves but one brother, Edgar, of this city of a family of ten. The funeral was held at Green’s church, Sunday and was largely attended. The G. A. R. under command of Major Frank R. Chase, his life long friend, was also the Son of Veterans were present. Rev. Norton, of Belding conducted the funeral, the music was furnished by a select choir. The flag which was presented to his Co. and carried thru the war being draped over his casket. The interment was in the family lot in the Orleans cemetery. Leander Berry was born in Ulster county, N.Y., February 10, 1832 and departed this life Aug. 22, 1919 at his home east of Belding. The year after his birth his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luther M. Berry moved to Burlington, Penn., where they lived until 1846 when they came to Michigan. Settling in Ionia county, September 1, of that year. In the year 1849 they moved to Kent county where they resided for six years returning to Orleans township, Ionia county. December 23, 1857 he was married to Miss Emmaline Babcock and in 1861 bought the farm on which he has since made his home until the time of his death. August 9, 1862 he enlisted in Co. B. 35th Reg., Mich. Vol. Inf. and served with that command until the close of the war, participating in numerous engagements and arduous campaigns in which that regiment took part. Leander Berry and wife were active and earnest members of the Methodist church and were influential in all good works in their community especially in times of sickness and death many times filling the place of doctor, nurse and undertaker. Mrs. Berry died December 3, 1908. They were the parents of six children, Warren Berry, of Idaho; Mrs. T. B. Winters, of Greenville; Mrs. Peter Anderson, of Cadillac; Justus E. Berry, of Six Lakes; Luther M. Berry, of Belding, and Mrs. Harris Bolster, of Orleans, who has taken faithful care of her devoted father in his declining years. He also leaves a host of friends and relatives to mourn their loss. Mr. Berry had an unusual jovial disposition, everyone was his friend and he has bequeathed to his children an untarnished name which is the result of his gentle, upright honest life.
