Portland Observer, 6 Feb 1913

Jacob Bessey, a former resident of Orange township, died at his home in Ionia 
last week at the age of 73 years.  The funeral services were conducted at the 
late home Saturday under the auspices of the Wm. H. Borden Post G.A.R., of which 
Mr. Bessey had long been a member.  Mr. Bessey enlisted with a New York regiment 
in 1862, and was honorably discharged and mustered out at the close of the war.  
In 1866 he came to Michigan and two years later was married to Miss Catherine 
Blocher, of Erie county, N.Y., who passed before him in 1910.  Mrs. Hugh 
Galloway, of Orange, is a daughter of deceased.
