Pioneer of This Vicinity Passes away. Father of Mrs. Addie Pickens and Mrs. John Hunt. Age 87. Martin Bever who for the past forty-nine years has lived in this vicinity which includes Woodbury, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Addie Pickens, Saturday following a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Bever was well known by the older generation of this part of the county. He has been blind for some time which affliction he endured with great patience and has been tenderly cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Pickens. He was a devout Christian and leaves a splendid influence. Obituary. Martin Bever, son of Solomon and Maria Bever was born in Seneca Co., Ohio, May 22, 1838 and departed this life at the home of his daughter Mrs. T.A. Pickens, June 20, 1925, aged 87 years and 28 days. He was married December 10, 1863 to Elizabeth Stryker. To this union were born four daughters Mrs. Addie A. Pickens of Woodland, Ida Blanche and Laura J. who were called Home in the early days of their young womanhood and Herma D. Hunt of Sebewa. They lived in Fulton County Ohio until 1876 when they moved to Michigan and the remainder of his life has been spent in the vicinity of Lake Odessa and Woodbury. Mrs. Bever died April 21, 1889 and in 1891 he was again married to Susan Henry who preceded him in death over seven years ago. He was a member of the Sebewa Baptist church at the time of his death and always exhibited remarkable patience and faith during his great affliction – blindness. He was ready and anxious for the final summons to the Home where there is no night and where the weary are at … [missing lines] … eleven children, eight brothers and three sisters. Three brothers and two sisters survive. The brothers have all lived to be over 80 years of age. He enlisted at his Country’s Call in Co. B, O.V.I. October 1, 1861 and spent nine months in service. He fought and was wounded in the battle of Pittsburg Lansing and was honorably discharged July 1862 at Columbus, Ohio. Three brothers also were in service. Besides those mentioned there also survive him two grand children and two great grand children. The funeral was held at the M.E. church Monday afternoon, the pastor Rev. F.H. Cramer officiating and the music was by Rev. and Mrs. A.L. Spafford. Burial was at Lake Side.
