Jan. 9, 2016 MELVIN ALBERT BIANG Madison, WI - Melvin Albert Biang, of Madison, WI. , passed away on December 15, 2016 after a brief illness of pneumonia. Mel was 92, he was born on October 17, 1923 in Chicago, IL., to George Charles and Minnie Therese (Witt) Biang. Mel was married to Shirley Mae Snyder of St. Ignace, mother of his children who resided on Fifth Avenue in lake Odessa along with their seven daughters. The Biangs moved north for some years. He was later married to Marion (Peterson) of Marquette, and they resided in lake Odessa on Sixth Avenue until 1975. He graduated from Proviso High School in Chicago in 1941 before serving in the United States Navy where he received an honorable disability discharge after briefly entering Naval Officers training in Communications. He worked for the Civil Aeronautics Division, and became an auditor for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture until his retirement in 1975. At the time the family moved to Marquette. He belonged to the BPOE # 410 and previously, the Marquette Elks lodge # 405 where he served as lodge secretary. He was a member of the American legion Post in Marquette. Mel enjoyed watching Chicago Cubs on TV, wintering in Punta Gorda, Fl. for several years, previously; playing cribbage, shooting pool, playing ping pong, and golf. He played the chord organ at holidays and was a wonderful accordion player. He loved music and dancing and the family did, as well. While lodge #405 Secretary of the Elks, Mel visited the DJ Jacobetti Veterans Home weekly, and played cribbage with several veterans on a regular basis. He especially enjoyed tending to his roses and spending time with family and friends, making trips to Michigan to see his girls and their families. He was known for some expressions he used occasionally such as "1-2-3", "that hits the spot", and "Kiddos." Surviving Mel is his special friend, JoAnne (of Madison), five of his daughters, all of Michigan,Linda Shearer of McMillan, Rene Kerns of Naubinway, Debra White of Cheboygan, Caroline Brown of Newberry, and Nanette Biang of lake Odessa; his one sister, Dolores Powers of Illinois; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He will be missed. Preceding him in death were his parents; one newborn son, Dennis Biang; two daughters, Elizabeth (Biang) Majinska and Shirley "Mickie" (Biang) Cournay; four sons-in-law, Bill (Rene) Prater, David (Nanette) Beckman, Richard (Beth) Majinska, Howard (Linda) Shearer; three granddaughters, Debbi Jo (Beckman) Mitchell, Jaime Majinska and Theresa (Majinska) Walker. Honoring Mel's request, he was cremated without funeral services.
