Bignell, 74 of Ionia died unexpectedly Saturday morning at Spectrum Health’s Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. Virginia was born on Jan. 11, 1937 in Grand Ledge, the daughter of Neil and Icylene (Brace) Smith. She graduated from Carson City High School with the class of 1955 and later worked as a nurse at Sheridan Community Hospital for 40 years. She was a member of the 1st Congregational Church of Sheridan. Virginia enjoyed spending time with her family, collecting angels and volunteering at her church and Sheridan Community Hospital. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Virginia is loved and survived by her children Howard and Lorena Bignell of Ionia, Timothy and Rochelle Bignell of Winston-Salem, N.C., Richard and Joanna Bignell of Six Lakes, Lisa Fox of Ionia and Robin and Mike Moore of Belding. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; her brothers and sisters and their spouses, Ronald and Bertha Smith of Grand Ledge, Gary and Sue Smith of Belding, Stanley Smith of Greenville and Melody and Randy Treynor of Belding. Virginia was preceded by her parents; her brother; Wayne; her sister, Sandra Houghton; sister-in-law Becky Smith; son-in-law, Charles Fox; and one grandson, Matthew Bignell. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at 1st Congregational Church of Sheridan with Pastor Philip VanDop officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Sheridan. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Memorial contributions may be given to 1st Congregational Church of Sheridan or to the Volunteers of Sheridan Community Hospital.
