After suffering great pain from cancer of the stomach for five weeks Francis B. Bignell passed from the earthly life January 1, 1914 aged 63 years at his farm home near Palo. Francis Burns Bignell was born in Allegan December 7, 1859. He was a son of Rev. and Mrs. George Bignell and the greater part of his life had been passed in Ionia county. Left fatherless at an early age he knew how to toil hard for his home people long before he reached manhood. Before the death of his father, who passed away the last day of December 1855, he with his parents and brothers moved to Ionia where he continued to reside until 1871 when he moved to Smyrna. There he engaged in the foundry business in partnership with the late J.A. Sage and continued in that occupation until 1890 when he with his family moved to his farm home near Palo where he passed the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Palo school board several years. a useful man in the community where he lived and was highly esteemed and respected by all who knew him. Besides his widow, he leaves four sons, Louis, who resides in South Dakota, Claude, Ellis and Howard and a daughter-in-law and two brothers, Charles W. and George Olin Bignell of Belding, to mourn the loss of a loved one, and a large circle of friends will miss one who was ever ready and willing to give aid and sympathy to those in need. Funeral services conducted by Rev. L.B. Buffum were held at the Palo Baptist church at 10 o'clock in the forenoon Monday, January 5, and the interment was in the Smyrna cemetery by the side of the wife of his young manhood who passed away January 3, 1873.
