Esther was born Feb. 29, 1920, in Gladwin, the daughter of Edward and Grace Carpenter Coan. Esther was married on Aug. 1, 1938, in Angola, Ind., to Samuel “Dick” Bird. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1996. She was also preceded by her parents; her sister, Bernice; and two brothers, Max and Bob. During her working years, Esther was the court officer for the Friend of the Court in Ionia County. For many years, Esther and Dick had a large strawberry farm by Belding. She was a past member of the First United Methodist Church, where she had served as Junior Choir Director. She enjoyed travel, reading and crossword puzzles. Esther had a true love of family and friends and a grace, style and a zest for life that was a blessing to her family and all those who knew her. She is survived by her children, Richard and Duchess Bird of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Robert and Yvonne Bird of Marne, Joann and Chuck Leipham of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., John and Robby Bird of Spring Lake and Kevin, Carol Bird of Gowen; her grandchildren, Becky Arbogast, Ben Riedel, Heather Bird, Stephen Bird, Ryan Bird, Shelley Leipham, Greg Leipham, Jen Leipham, Meagan Bird, Matt Bird, Jacob Bird and Amanda Bird; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Barb Fisher and Ruth Long. Funeral and committal services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Private interment will be in Greene Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Memorial contributions may be given to the Belding Library or Spectrum Health Hospice.
