(Lishman) Bird, 85, of Greenville, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 24, 2007, in Vero Beach, Florida. Born on February 24, 1922 in Alameda, California, Frances was the daughter of Harold and Nan (Calenberg) Lishman. Frances was married on December 26, 1945 in San Francisco to George H. Bird who preceded her in death on September 27, 1996. She was a long-time resident of the Greenville/Belding areas where she and her husband, George, were owners of Bird Fertilizer and Grain Company, as well as the Bird Blueberry Plantations in Greenville and Holland. In her early years, Frances attended Heald College in Oakland, California where she earned a business degree which, later in her life, would play an important role in her management and operation of the fertilizer and grain companies and the blueberry farms. She also obtained her teaching credentials through Central Michigan Normal (now known as Central Michigan University) and taught for several years in the Greenville/Belding areas. She was a member of the Belding United Methodist Church, the Kent County Humane Society, the Michigan Blueberry Growers Association, Farm Bureau, the North American Blueberry Growers Association, the Red Hat Society, and Friends of the Alvah N. Belding library. Frances will be remembered as an astute business woman. She will also be remembered as a person who loved animals and who appreciated nature. Frances will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Daniel and Neila Bird of Vero Beach, Florida, her grandchildren and their spouses, Patrick and Michele Bird of South Lyon, Michigan, Dr. Mara Bird and Mauricio Sanabria of Long Beach, California, and Ryan and Christina Bird of Spring Lake, Michigan. Frances is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Lucas, Bryce, Coco, Halla, Isabel and Ethan. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Connie Shatz of the Belding United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Interment will be in Greene Cemetery. A luncheon will be held following the committal service at the Belding United Methodist Church.
