Excerpts from Detroit Obituary

SAMUEL LEE BIRD

Died Wednesday, November 20, 2024-age 76 of Haslett at Cadillac, MI.
Born April 1, 1948 in Ionia,MI, son of Wilfrid Bird & Dorothy (nee Westbrook) 
Bird.
Sam grew up in Belding on his family dairy farm..
Graduate of Michigan State University, that began his career teaching & coaching 
football & wrestling at Belding High School.
He  later relocated to Haslett, where he embraced farming full-time, growing 
strawberries, raspberries, pumpkins & Christmas Trees.
After several years of farming, he began teaching at Haslett Public schools, he 
taught Math at Meridian High, Haslett Middle & Haslett High School, retiring in 
2012.
Survived by his wife, Mary Bird, son Conrad & his wife Meghan Bird, three 
grandchildren; Maisie James, Wylon  Ford & Tatum Colette, daughter Emily Bird & 
her partner Robert Hunter.He was a brother to Marjorie Hansen, Bill (Liz) Bird & 
Jeannie (Joe) Crawley, brother-in-law to Pat (Jerry) Potter, Jo (Neil) Almond, 
John Johnson, Paul Johnson, Julie (Steve) DeLanoy, Uncle to many nieces & 
nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents; step-son Kasey Courser, brother-in-law Scott 
Johnson; sister-in-law Kris Malone & Jane Johnson.
Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, December 8, 2024 at 1 to 4 p.m. at the 
Haslett Middle School Media Center, remarks 2:30 p.m..
Memorial contributions may be made to Haslett Youth Sports or the U of M 
Alzheimer's Disease research Fund.
