Bird, 83, of Greenville, passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 1996, at United Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 6, 1913, in Bedford, Va., to Samuel and Harriet Jennings Bird. He graduated from Belding High School and Michigan State University and was a member of the MSU wrestling team. He was founder and owner of Bird Fertilizer Co. in Greenville, Ionia and Edmore for 35 years and retired in 1988. He continued to operate his blueberry farms in Greenville, Holland and Haslett. He was a past president of the Belding Lions Club and past president of the Greenville Rotary Club and was awarded the Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Belding and was co-founder of the Michigan Plant Food Council, a statewide fertilizer and chemical association. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant with the U.S. Coast Guard. He was married Dec. 26, 1945, in the Navy Chapel in San Francisco to Frances A. Lishman. He is survived by his wife, Frances; children Daniel F. and Neila Bird of Hutchinson Island, Fla.; grandchildren Patrick D., Mara N., and Ryan E. Bird; one sister, Louise Eklund of Portland, Ore.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Wilfrid E. “Bill” and Dorothy Bird of Belding and James B. Bird of Fresno, Calif. He was preceded in death by brothers Richard, Jess J. and John Bird; sisters Maida Lincoln and Lillian Bird. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home, Belding. Interment will be in Greene Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
