Sept. 30, 1972 Services held For Joseph D. Birkey Joseph D. Birkey, 90, of 626 Atwood Street, N. E., Grand Rapids, passed away at his residence Saturday morning following a long illness. He was born in Illinois, November 11, 1880., the son of John and Catherine (Schrock) Birkey. He came to the Clarksville area in 1914 and farmed northwest of the village until 1954 when he retired and moved to Grand Rapids. His wife Elizabeth, passed away in 1929. Mr. Birkey was a member of the Bowne Mennonite church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs.John (Neva) Yordy of Ashley and Mrs. Melvin (Edna)Stahl of Dafter (in the upper peninsula); three sons, Chester of Pompeii, Roy of Grand Rapids and Melvin of Goshen, Ind.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Elf Naffziger of Rockwell, Iowa and Mrs. Katie Zehr of Manson, Iowa; and two brothers, John and William Birkey, both of Manson, Iowa. Funeral services were held on Monday at 1:30 at the Bowne Mennonite church with burial in Bowne Mennonite cemetery. He reposed at the Pickens Funeral Chapel in Clarksville until Monday forenoon. Rev. Daniel Zook and Rev. Tobias Schrock officiated.
