Black, 96, of Ionia, passed away March 19, 2000 at Heartland Health Care Center. She was born June 27, 1903 in Easton Township, the daughter of William G. and Minnie C. (Arnold) Stowell. She attended Ionia High School and before graduating, enrolled in Ionia County Normal. She was long active in and officer of the Ionia Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was the founder of the American Cancer Society locally, among other charities and activities. She was a very early women business owner in the area, owning and operating Midway Tavern at what was then US-16 and M-14 and is now Grand River Ave. and M-66. She purchased the tavern in 1941. She also owned the adjacent service station, operated for many years by John Sarlouis. She sold the tavern in 1965. She married the late Chester Black, by whom she had two sons. The marriage ended in divorce in 1939. Chester Black left Ionia with Co. H. when it was federalized in 1940 and continued in the army until his retirement. Louise is survived by her grandchildren, Robert L. Black of Ionia, William (Bunky) Black of Palo, David A. Black of Fla. Melissa S. Bree of Calif., James E. Elliott of Jenison; 10 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; niece, Caroline and James Hopkins of Arizona; nephews, John and Pat Stowell of Ionia. She was preceded in death by her sons, Robert C. in 1979 and William A. in 1991 and brother, Melvin G. Stowell in 1959. Funeral services for Mrs. Black will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with the Rev. Scott Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral services. Anyone wishing to make memorial contributions may make them to the Ionia Area Hospice.
