He was born in Fenwick on February 14, 1921, the son of James A. G. and Etta Lund Black. He was married on January 1, 1942 in Sheridan to Frances A. Dickinson. He was employed for 30 years at the General Motors Fisher Body plant in Grand Rapids and was very involved in his church, Greenville Bible Methodist. Until his death, he was active with his mini-farm where he enjoyed his contended chickens, gardening and fruit trees. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Black, in 2004, his sister, Winnifred Walters; and brother Russell Black. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances; daughter, Alberta and Nathan Burley of Cedar Springs; sons, James and Dawn Black of Greenville, Melvin and Joyce Black of Muskegon; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Retha Ruhl of Bellingham, Wash., sisters-in- law, Claribelle Green of Cedar Springs, Martha Tiede of Greenville; and brother- in-law, Don Dickinson of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with the Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Interment is in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Visitation today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to Greenville Bible Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
