It seems he had just stopped a moment to let a through freight pass on the main track and didn’t notice in the dark that another freight train was on the sidetrack a few rods west and just starting to back a car down east into the lumber yard. Neither was the rear of the car guarded by the brakeman with light as required and so e’er Mr. Blackmore was aware he was knocked down and partially run over by the car, his left arm being crushed nearly to the shoulder and he being injured some internally and bruised otherwise. Mr. E. G. York with others was close by and grabbed him as quickly as possible and pulled him out from under the car. He was picked up and taken to Dr. Peabody’s office rooms where he in company with Drs. Morse and McLaughlin set at work to care for him. There was no saving the arm, of course, and so the Doctors proceeded at once to take it off close to the shoulder. The advanced age of the patient however together with his rather poor health combined to weaken him for the ordeal and though he survived the operation, the heart action soon began to weaken and he passed away before restored to consciousness from the anaesthetic. The remains were turned over to undertaker Weed who gave them proper care. The deceased’s son William of Charlotte was notified and came her that night. The other son Trum was also notified. Where the accident happened is a most dangerous place and should be well guarded by gates and more than this the brakesman should have been on the rear end of the car with lantern in hand as is required to watch out for such accidents and to give warning. The crossing in question is that of our main business street where hundreds of people pass every day and should be well protected. It is certainly a wonder that more people are not either injured or killed there than there are.
