C. Blacksten died very suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Austin P. Hart, in Battle Creek last Monday, the news of which shocked the entire community. She and Mr. Blacksten had gone there to spend Thanksgiving and everything passed very pleasantly until Saturday, when she was taken violently ill from heart trouble. Mrs. Blacksten’s name was Marietta Kelley, and she was born in Bellevue, O., December 31, 1845. She came to Portland in 1857 and has resided here constantly since that time. In 1863 she was united in marriage to George Whitney, and there were three children born to this union, two of whom are living. They are Mrs. A. P. Hart, of Battle Creek, and Claude Whitney, of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Both were here to attend the funeral, which was held at the late home of deceased in Portland Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. D. E. Millard. In 1908 Mrs. Whitney was married to Jabez C. Blacksten. Besides her husband and the two children mentioned Mrs. Blacksten is survived by four sisters, two of whom, Mrs. Luff and Mrs. Henry Sales, were present at the funeral. Other relatives from abroad who were here Thursday to attend the funeral were W. W. Andrews, Muskegon, and Mrs. and Mrs. Cole, of Lansing, the latter a daughter of Mr. Blacksten. Mrs. Blacksten was an active member of the Grand Army Circle and of the Rebekah lodge. Services at the grave were conducted by the ladies of the circle, the G.A.R. furnished the bearers and many members of the local post were in attendance. During her long residence in Portland Mrs. Blacksten has won the highest esteem of the entire community and all mourn her sudden demise.
