Mrs. Jabez Blacksten Succumbs to Paralysis Suffered November 14. On the 14th of November Mrs. Jabez C. Blacksten was stricken with paralysis at her home in this village. Last Thursday afternoon she died as the direct result of the stroke, the paralysis having reached her heart. In the meantime she had gradually grown weaker and except at brief intervals she had shown but little improvement from the first. She would have been 60 years of age had she lived until the 21st inst. Mary N. Hines was born in Richland county, Ohio, which is also the birthplace of her husband, although neither knew the other was born there until after their marriage, which occurred near Albion, Noble county, Ind., in 1866. In ’70 they came to Sunfield and settled upon a farm, of which they became dispossessed by the underhanded methods of those who professed to be his friends. In 1872 they came to Portland and have resided here ever since. Deceased is survived by Mrs. Eugene Cole of Lansing and Frank of Portland; also by two sisters, Mrs. Stafford of Lansing and Mrs. Lydia Monroe (formerly of this village) of Orangeville, Barry county, and by Georges Hines of Lake Odessa and two other brothers living at Albion, Ind. Mrs. Blacksten was a member of the Methodist church, and she was consistent in its teachings, for she was always kind to the sick and many have been recipients of her tenderness and nursing. She was also a member of the Relief Corps in which she always took a prominent part, and Lady Maccabees. In the latter she carried a certificate for $1,000 in favor of her husband. She made all arrangements for her funeral and burial and asked that her wishes in this regard be carried out, which was done. Services were conducted from the house Sunday afternoon by Rev. Robinson. The capacity of this house was taxed by the number of friends who wished to pay their last respects to the memory of deceased, a large representation being present from W.R. C. as a body, they acting as escort. It had been the intention of the families of deceased and Frank Blacksten to go to Florida November 21st for the winter, but her sickness compelled a change in plans and it has not yet been decided whether the original plans will now be carried out, the winter having become so far advanced. It all depends on the decision of the elder gentleman.
