Jan. 31, 1899 SHOCKING ACCIDENT AN EASTON FARMER INSTANTLY KILLED BY A PASSENGER TRAIN Frederick Bluemle's Last Walk on the D. L. & N. Track-Coroner Williams and a Jury Consider the Fatal Accident and Adjourn to Monday. Frederick Bluemle, a farmer living in the town of Easton, a short distance north of the Stanton Junction, was struck by the engine on the passenger train due here from Big Rapids at 10:45 Thursday, and instantly killed. He was thrown from the track into the ditch and was struck by some part of the engine, behind the left ear, the blow fracturing the skull and causing instant death. Engineer Jerry McCarty, one of the most careful men on the road, was running the engine and no blame can possibly attach to him. Mr. Bluemie left his home a short time before the accident happened to go to C. E. Higby's and was walking on the track or rather on the ties outside the rail. The accident happened about 300 feet south form Higby's crossing and on a sharp curve where he could not have been seen by the engineer until close upon him. The decease is very deaf and has before this had several narrow escapes from being run over, and was once struck by a train but escaped without serious injury. The body was left in charge of the brakeman and the train came on to Ionia. Coroner Plyn Williams was notified and Deputy Sheriff Malone summoned B. B. Hall, T. M. Comstock and W. W. Hall as a coroner's jury, and with a special furnished by Superintendent T. M. Fish they left for the scene of the accident. Arriving there the Jury was impanneled and sworn and viewed the body. C. E. Higby was sworn as a witness and identified the remains as the body of Frederick Bluemle, and the inquest was adjourned to meet at Justice Nesbitt's office Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The body was brought to the city on the train and taken in charge by G. H. Allured & Sons. Frederick Bluemle was 64 years old and has been a resident of Easton for many years. He was an honest, industrious, hard working man and was highly respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and eleven children, seven girls and four boys, the youngest a boy 13 years old. Four of the daughters are married, one of them being the wife of Ted Callow of this city. The funeral of Frederick Bluemle will be held from the Evangelical church in this city Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock. The service will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. G. Haller. The inquest in the case of the late Frederice Bluemie was concluded Tuesday, the jury returning a verdict of accidental death, and exhonorating the D. L. & N. Rail Road. Company and those in charge of the train. Additional Comments: Highland Park Cem.
