Bogue died at his home in this village at 10 o’clock Monday night from the results of a stroke of apoplexy. He was 72 years of age on the fifth of last December. His death was very sudden. He had been down town but a few moments before and seemed to be as well as ever. He had scarcely got inside his home when he was stricken. Dr. Alton was first called and afterward Dr. Dellenbaugh, also, but they said there was no hope for him. He was a native of St. Lawrence county, N.Y., and came with his father to Portland in November 1833 and has resided here ever since. Portland was then an Indian trading post and William’s companions were Indian children and he came to know their language as well as they did. In 1866 Mr. Bogue entered the mercantile business in Portland and continued in it for upward of 20 years. He was postmaster of Portland under Presidents Taylor and Fillmore and again under Cleveland during his first term. He was also village clerk three years. He leaves a widow in very poor health, and two children—Mrs. Theron Loomis and Bruce Bogue. Mr. Bogue was a good citizen—clean in his habits, upright and honest. Funeral services will be conducted by the M. E. church at 2:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon. In all probability Rev. D. E. Millard will officiate, although it had not been decided when we went to press.
