Bond, Civil was veteran, who passed away at the home of his son, Thomas Bond, in Grand Rapids, this week, were held this morning. Mr. Bond was buried in Montcalm county, where he formerly lived and where he was a member of the G.A.R. post at Stanton. Mr. Bond was well known to Ionia veterans, having spent much time here, and having lived here with his son for a long while. He was a member of Co. A, twenty-first infantry, enlisted at Ionia, August 9, 1862, for three years and serving until March 5, 1863 when he was mustered out of the service at Chattanooga because of wounds received in action. He enlisted again in 1865 for one year and was mustered out in Washington in June. Mr. Bond went through life, after leaving the service of his country, with his face badly disfigured as the result of a gunshot and received at the battle of Stone River. It is related that Mr. Bond and Myron Morse were advancing side by side when Mr. bond received a bullet in the face and fell apparently lifeless. He was considered to be one of the killed in action and it was not until several months later that Mr. Morse learned that he had recovered in a hospital from the terrible wound he received. It is further related that wounded terribly, so terribly in fact, that he was thought dead—Bond lay on the field of battle unnoticed while the wounded were being taken care of. For hours he lay there until it was discovered that life was not extinct. He was taken to a field hospital and from there to the hospital where he eventually recovered. But during his lifetime he bore the scars of the bullet which struck just below the eye. Mr. Bond is survived by one son, Thomas, of Grand Rapids; three daughters, Mrs. William Jenks, of Livingston Mont.; Mrs. Otto Key, of Stanton, and Mrs. Frank Beemer, of Mecosta; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Joseph Hosberg, of northwest of town. He was 86 years of age at the time of his death.
