Mrs. Sarah Briggs Friday received a telegram announcing the death of her mother, Mrs. Hiram Borden, at the home of her daughter at Dutton, near Grand Rapids. Mrs. Briggs, accompanied by Mrs. L.P. Essick, left for Dutton on the noon train. Mrs. Borden was one of the old pioneers of this county, having come here about 1840. Her husband, Hiram Borden, died many years ago, and one son, Wm. H. Borden, in whose honor the G.A.R. post was named, was killed at Gettysburg. The surviving son, Byron, is a resident of Ronald. ------------ Funeral of Mrs. Jane Borden The funeral services of Mrs. Jane Borden were conducted at the Church of Christ Sunday afternoon by Rev. W.H. Scott. The G.A.R. post and the W.R.C. attended in a body and the church was crowded with friends and acquaintances. Mrs. Borden was born in Herkimer, New York on Sept. 18, 1816 and came to Ionia in 1840 or 41. She had thus been a resident of Ionia for half a century. The deceased was the mother of seven children, only three of whom survive her. Two sons were in the union army, one, Wm. H. Borden, who enlisted in the first company raised in Ionia, was killed at Gettysburg and the G.A.R. post of this city was named in his honor. The other son, Byron, is a resident of Ronald. Mrs. Sarah Briggs of this city and Mrs. Lizzie Tupper of Caledonia, Kent county, are the surviving daughters. The deceased had been a member of the Church of Christ for many years and was honored and respected by a wide circle of friends. The remains were laid to rest in the old cemetery.
