April 26, 2012 Dolores Joan Boufford, 86, of Ionia, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2012. On May 15, 1926, in Cadillac, William and Alice (Garneau) Benedict welcomed their baby daughter Dolores Joan. She married Carl Frederick Ziegler at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Cadillac on Aug. 10, 1944. They had five daughters. He preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1969. She then married Herb Essex on April 14, 1973, who preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 1982. She was an X-ray technician when she retired from Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. She married Elmer Boufford on June 19, 2004 in Lake Odessa. He preceded her in death on April 18, 2008. After graduating from Cadillac High School, she served in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. She had been a Girl Scout Leader when her girls were younger. She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia. Her trips to Lourdes and the Holy Lands with her friend, Olga Romanow of Pinconning, were cherished. She loved to square dance, sew, and play cards ... if she was winning. She enjoyed quilting and was a member of "Fit To Be Tied" and the "Ionia Ladies Thimble Club". There was always a book nearby that she was reading; there weren't many genre of books she hadn't read. She could always find time to watch an old John Wayne or Sean Connery movie! Surviving are her sister-in-law, Betty (Jack) Baird of Cadillac; daughters; Cynthia Ziegler-Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Mary Ziegler of Ionia, Janice (Jim) Schell of Chesaning, Marsha (Jerry) Packer of Dixon, MO, and Joanna (Rod) Hodges of Hudsonville; 10 grandchildren; Shane (Kim), Jamie (Kurt), Chris (Char), Christine (Dave), Gina, James, David (Kelly), Craig, Shellie and Heather; 19 great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews; step- children; Gail (Earl) Seger, Patricia Boufford, Mary Gray, Elizabeth (John) Pruitt, Father Thomas Boufford, Joan (Dennis) Senchuck, Helen (Dorr) Bissell, Ed (Peggy) Boufford, Joseph Boufford, John (Cheryl) Boufford, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Father Thomas Boufford at 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ionia. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Cadillac. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ss. Peter and Paul Educational Trust Fund, 434 High St., Ionia, MI 48846, in memory of Mrs. Dolores Boufford, or Ionia Area Hospice, 601 E. Washington St., Ionia, MI 48846.
