JOHN); CORA (McKOWAN)(MONKS)(MRS. PHILLIP): IONIA SENTINEL STANDARD, MI, 5-25-1948: "Cora Monks Bower, 84, of Lake Odessa, died unexpectedly at her home Monday afternoon. She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Born Cora McKowan, daughter of Gilbert and Sarah McKowan December 29, 1863 at Tremayne's Corners, Berlin Township. She attended rural schools and the Ionia High School. In 1885, she married Phillip Monks of Boston Township. They resided in Berlin Township until his death about 30 years ago when she moved to Lake Odessa. Later she married John Bower who survives. Also surviving are three children: Earl Monks of Portland, Ethel Lawrence of Hastings, Mrs. Nellie Badder of Ionia; 2 stepsons: Clyde Monks of Ionia, Tello Bower of Big Rapids; 3 stepdaughters: Mrs. J. J. Grieble and Mrs. George Barker of Lake Odessa, Mrs. Arvilla Murty of Grand Rapids; 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren. She was a first cousin to the late Royal Hawley of Ionia. Burial was in Balcom cemetery."
