Find Ionia Woman Dead By Freezing

Mrs. Almon Bowerman, 74-year-old wife of the late Almon Bowerman, for 32 years
Ionia county circuit court bailiff, was found dead beside the open door of her
home early Thursday morning.  Mrs. Bowerman’s body had been frozen by near zero
weather when found by a neighbor, Mrs. Victor Hedstrom, also of Ionia.

Coroner Harry Myers and Deputy Sheriff Loyal Hodson, who investigated, declared
Mrs. Bowerman appeared to have suffered an acute illness about 8 o’clock
Wednesday night which might have been a heart attack.  It was believed the
attack left her lying helpless on the floor in front of the open door and she
succumbed to the near zero weather.

Mrs. Bowerman and her neighbor, Mrs. Hedstrom, had worked out a signal if Mrs.
Bowerman needed help.  Mrs. Bowerman was to open the front door and call Mrs.
Hedstrom.  She appeared to have made the attempt but Mrs. Hedstrom did not hear.
 Lights in the house were still burning when officers arrived.

Almon Bowerman died Jan. 29.

Funeral services for Mrs. Almon Bowerman, 74, of East Main street, will be held
Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Boynton funeral home.  Temporary burial
will be in the Mausoleum at Highland Park cemetery.
