              LAKE ODESSA AREA FARMER DIES AS RESULT OF CRASH
              Two Others Are Removed To Grand Rapids Hospital

One Ionia County man died Monday, two others were transferred to Blodgett 
Hospital, Grand Rapids, in condition declared critical from auto accidents 
the past week. 

Ralph Bowerman, 57 Lake Odessa farmer, died at the Pennock Hospital, 
Hastings, after remaining unconscious since an accident June 29 on the 
Ionia-Barry County line road east of Lake Odessa.

His skull and both knees were fractured and his kidney punctured when his 
auto and one driven by Edwin Williams, 19 of Freeport, collided. 

Deputy George Cowels said the accident happened when Williams braked to 
slacken his speed on seeing Bowerman appear over a knoll and skidded 
sidewise on the gravel highway into Bowerman's car. 

Williams brother, Eugene, 21, riding with him, got a disorderly summons when 
Deputy Cowels said he interfered with his investigations of the accident. 

Transferred to Grand Rapids from the Ionia County Memorial Hospital during 
the week end in serious condition were Irwin Moon, 57, South Ionia trucker 
and Arthur Hampshire, 66 Route Four Ionia. 

Moon received a pelvic and a hip fracture when his truck ran up a steep 
embankment on M-66 north of Ionia to overturn on him Saturday.

Hampshire suffered internal injuries and severe shock when he walked into an 
auto driven by Evert Hotchkiss, Route 4, Ionia on old M-21 in South Ionia 
while watching a County mowing machine go by on June 29.
