The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Thursday, October 12, 1967
Funeral services for Elwood M. Brake, Sr. who died Wednesday in Florida will 
be Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at First Methodist church in Ionia.  A 
memorial has been established by rural teachers of the county.  The body will 
arrive in Detroit Thursday evening.  It will be at Stone-Kauffman funeral home 
until 9:30 Saturday morning.  

He was born March 23, 1896 in Clarksville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John 
Brake.  Since retiring in 1961 following 45 years in the teaching profession 
and as Ionia county school commissioner he has maintained his membership in 
First Methodist church.  He was also an honorary member of the Rotary club and 
life member of Ionia Masonic lodge.  While spending the winters in Florida he 
was also a member of Kissimmee All State Tourist club and Orange Garden Civic 
association.
