She was the daughter of Kellen and Ethel Mae (Carper) Clifton of Grayson, Kentucky. She was born on March 26, 1933 in Grayson, Kentucky. Clara attended Prichard High School in Grayson, Kentucky. Both Clara and Gene were big basketball fans including the University of Kentucky Wildcats at the college level, which began in high school. Clara worked at Jone's Jewelry and Peterson's Jewelry, both in downtown Ionia. One of her first jobs after moving to Ionia from Mason, Michigan was at the Scale House Restaurant as a waitress located in south Ionia. She loved to garden and can many vegetables and jellies. She was famous for her banana bread and one of the best peanut brittle makers in America. Just ask her. She was a strong Christian morally and ethically, and loved all the simple and happy things in life that made people laugh, and enjoyed Sunday dinners with family. She also loved playing euchre with friends and dominos with her husband Gene. She loved doing for her grandchildren. Gene and Kaye did an enormous amount of traveling, from Michigan to Kentucky to Florida, and also the U.P. of Michigan, supporting her husband and his career with the State of Michigan. Clara is preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, Gene Brammell; a daughter, youngest of three, Vanessa (Brammell) Peterson; her parents, as mentioned above; 2 brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Brammell) Harmon and husband Richard, of Muir; her son, Phillip Brammell and wife Maggie, of Ionia; sister, Bess Reese of Cape Coral, FL; son- in-law, Chuck Peterson of Ionia; sister-in-law, Sandy Brammell of Lansing, MI; also a sister-like friend Liz Winston of Ionia; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren, too numerous to name. She will be greatly loved, missed, and remembered always by all of them. The Funeral Service will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Lehman Funeral Homes, 220 Rich Street, Ionia, with Pastor Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church presiding. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, prior to the service. In Lieu of Flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ionia Area Hospice, in memory of Clara.
