Gertrude Brand, age 92, of Saranac, passed away March 10, 2007 in Traverse 
City.  She was born September 11, 1914 in Grand Rapids the daughter of Arend 
and Anna (Compagner) Vander Leest.  Gertrude married Martin Heath Dyk in 1935 
who preceded her in death in1970.  She went on to marry Floyd Brand in 1972 
who preceded her in death in 2006.

She attended Saranac schools graduating in 1932.  She went to County Normal 
and later became a school teacher in Saranac Schools for many years.  She was 
an active member of Saranac Community Church where she was active in Sunday 
School teaching, Flowers, and Bible School.

Gertrude is survived by her daughters; Karen and Kenneth Christophers of 
Suttons Bay, Kathy and Paul Calvin Powell of Cedar ; step daughters, Barbara 
and Timothy Fenn of Saranac, Gloria and Robert Veurink of Florida; sisters, 
Linda Blaser of Belding, Rita and David Porter of Portage; grandchildren Kelly 
Sean Karcher, Jacob Martin Christopher, Jonah Heath Powell; step grandchild, 
Beth and Russell Thomas; 3 step great grandchildren, several nieces and 
nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 siblings, Katheryn Rush in 1986 and 
Edwin Compagner in 2000 and 1 granddaughter Heather Veurink.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM, Thursday, at Saranac Community Church 
with Curt Chadwick officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives 
Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac. Anyone wishing may 
make memorial contributions in Gertrude’s name to Edwin & Maxine Memorial 
Education Fund or Boston Historical Society.
