Her maiden name was Telford and Stuben Co.,New York was the place of her birth. When four years old her parents moved to Melmore, Seneca Co., Ohio, where she lived till she came to Michigan. On the 27th of Sept. 1855 she was married to Mr.Valentine Bretz. They moved to Michigan about 37 years ago, about two years before the civil war.To mention the fact that her husband was in the Union service during the war is but to hint at what she endured during those terrible years. Seven children were born to them, three sons and two daughters remain to mourn, the loss of one of the best of mothers. The husband and father received his honorable discharge from life's warfare on the 11th of June 1886 and now she too has gone to join that innumerable company, in that mysterious realm from whence no traveler returns. At the age of 13 she was converted and united with the Presbyterian church. When she came here, not finding a Presbyterian church, she united with the Wesleyan Methodist church. In the early spring of 1876 the Methodist Episcopal Society was organized here, and the Wesleyan class having gone down, Mrs. Bretz joined the M.E. Society very shortly after its organization. For twenty years she was a faithful and efficient worker in this church and the church joins with her relatives in mourning their loss. We are comforted, yea rejoice in the assurance that "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth;Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them."
