Stephen A. Briggs, aged 60 years 9 months and 10 days, quietly passed away at 
his home in South Ionia Monday night, March 13, at 10 o’clock, after a long 
suffering illness of ten weeks.

Stephen Briggs was born in Steuben county, New York, May 3, 1856, where he 
lived with his parents until ten years of age when they moved to North Shade in 
Gratiot county, Michigan.  They lived here a short time then moved to the farm 
which the father bought two miles north of Palo.  He was united in marriage 
September 23, 1879, to Clara J. Hayes.  They resided in Montcalm county until 
the year 1901 when they moved to the Dougherty farm two mile south of Lyons.  
Here Mr. Briggs labored hard and faithfully until the death of Mr. Dougherty 
when he took full charge of the farm, living there until the farm was sold in 
the year 1915.  Then they came to the Dick Taylor farm, and in May, 1916, moved 
to South Ionia, where Mr. Briggs remained until death claimed him.  To this 
union were born six children, four of whom survive.  

He was a kind and loving husband and father, devoted to his family, working 
hard and cheerfully to supply their many needs and comforts, always doing for 
others regardless of self.  Even during his suffering he tried to be cheerful 
minded and look forward to more peaceful moments which could only be found in 
that everlasting slumber, death.

Those left to mourn the sad loss are a wife, Clara J., one son, Sidney M.; 
three daughters, Addie M., Hattie A., and Mary R.; a brother, Joe Briggs, a 
sister, Mrs. Dora Cole; a stepmother, Mrs. Cynthia Stilson, and a host of 
friends.
