James Elwin Briggs, age 71, of Ionia died Sunday, January 9, 2005.  Mr. Briggs 
was born December 5, 1933 in Charlotte, Michigan, the son of Nyle and Ethelwyn 
(Ives) Briggs.  Mr. Briggs formerly owned Briggs Electric in Ionia until the 
early 1970s.  He was then employed at the Lansing State Journal for over 20 
years as a Master Electrician.  In his spare time he enjoyed model trains, 
woodworking and boating.

He is survived by sons Rodney (Rhonda), Bradley (Gailene), Dennis (Vicki), 
Scott (Michelle) Briggs all of Ionia, daughters Teressa Briggs and Chris (Kim) 
Rowley of Ionia, Karen (Rich) Taylor of Byron Center, 14 grandchildren, 5 great-
grandchildren, brothers William (Judy) of Battle Creek, Joseph (Connie) of 
Charlotte and sister Judy Hartgerink of Lansing.  He was preceded in death by 
his wife Ardyce in 2002.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend 
Kenneth Harger officiating.  Interment will be in Kalamazoo Cemetery.  
Visitation will be Monday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. 
to 8 p.m.  If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the family for a 
future designation.  Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
