Briggs, whose critical illness at his home in Bozeman, Mont., was noted in these columns last week, died on the evening of November 10th of what is believed to have been cancer of the stomach. Mr. Briggs was well and favorable known in and about Portland in Clinton county, where he resided prior to his removal to Montana, and news of his demise will sorrow many acquaintances. Mr. Briggs was a brother of Mrs. Allen Griffin and Mrs. Claude J. Beebe, of Portland , and besides these leaves two other sisters, Mrs. E. A. Maynard and Mrs. W. H. Anderson, both of Bozeman, and both of whom are known here. He was born in Clinton county, August 24, 1846, and obtained his education in the public schools, Lansing Academy and University of Michigan. For ten years after his graduation from the state university he taught in various places throughout the state and while a resident of Eagle township was commissioner of schools of Clinton county. He held the office one term. In 1882 Mr. Briggs disposed of his farming lands in this section and located in Montana, where he engaged extensively in raising horses, cattle and sheep. He took a great deal of pride in his blooded horses which were among the finest in that section of the country. Seven years ago Mr. Briggs, with his wife and son, Arthur, moved from their large ranch west of Bozeman and took up their residence in the city, where Mr. Briggs’ death took place. Mr. Briggs retained his farming interests and continued in the business of buying and selling livestock until his death. His health had been poor, however, for some time, in fact his migration to the west was made in the hope of obtaining physical strength.
