Briggs, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Holcomb, was born at Orleans, Michigan, June 16, 1860, and died at her home in Belding Sept. 14, 1899, aged 39 years, 2 mons. 28 days. She was married to Wm. Briggs June 16, 1881. As she never possessed a strong constitution her young life was one of much sickness and suffering. Three years ago it became evident that consumption was making inroads upon her frail constitution and for two and a half years her condition was such that, to her friends, hope and fear alternated. The last six months hope had well-nigh fled and in spite of the most devoted care from family, friends, and physician, at four o’clock on the above date her spirit took its flight. She leaves a husband, daughter, father, mother, and two sisters, besides other relatives and friends. Mrs. Brigs gave her heart to God in early life and united with the M. E. church at Orleans, and her membership was transferred to Belding a few weeks before her death. Patience, forbearance and the welfare of others were marked traits in her life and during the three years of suffering not a murmur nor a complaint did she utter, but a happy smile and cheerful greeting welcomed all. Of a modest, retiring nature, not given to many words, yet we are persuaded that the blessed influence of her life will live on and bear fruit. The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. A. O. Carman, at the M. E. church, from the text found in John 11.24-26. The Scripture lesson was read from Psalms 23, which was quoted by her before her death. The Ladies’ Aid Society of the M. E. church and the society of the Woodmen attended in body in honor to the dead. The burial was made in Riverside cemetery.
