She was born on April 13, 1936, in Diamondale, to Francis and Margaret (Skutt) Whiting. She attended Potterville schools, and worked at Don’s Restaurant where she met her husband, Joseph Brinkley. They moved to Detroit in the early 1960s, where she worked in manufacturing. In 1973, she moved to Lake Odessa, where she met the love of her life, Elton Engness. She was a caregiver for the elderly until 1992, when health problems caused her to retire. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; her daughter Cindy Rock; her life-mate Elton Engness; and her sister Marjorie Wardell. She is survived by her daughter, Carrie Courtney of Lake Odessa; her brother Gary Whiting of Frederic; grandchildren Jennifer (James) Baxter of Sidney, Mary Rock of Ionia, Sarah (Bill Willcox) Perez of Lake Odessa, and Stacy (Justin) Miller of Sunfield. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Parker, Alexis, Xavier, Joey, Jaden and Keanan, and her beloved dog Scooter. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 1 p.m., at The Living Gospel Church, 1600 Rochester St., Lake Odessa. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge Grand Rapids. Arrangements are by the Koops Funeral Chapel - Lake Odessa.
