Work of the Grim Reaper.
Death of Alfred Broad.

Alfred Broad passed into his eternal inheritance at 10 o’clock on Saturday
night.  His age was 70 years and 3 months.  It was up to only a few short weeks
ago that the erect figure of Mr. Broad was seen on the streets of the city where
he had so long resided, and the news of his death came as a shock to even many
intimate acquaintances.  He had been confined to his bed only about two weeks
with diabetes.

Few men in the county had a wider acquaintance among the older residents of the
county.  For many years in and following the ‘70s he was a drover and butcher,
and he was almost daily riding the territory tributary to Ionia.  The meat
market firm of Broad & Plant was long a leading mart in Ionia.

Deceased was born in Oxfordshire, England, where he lived until 1851, when he
came to America at the age of 21 years.  In 1961 he was married to the faithful
and loving helpmeet who survives him, and in 1870 they came to Ionia, which city
has since been their home.

A funeral service was conducted at the home where he so long lived, and died,
No. 215 North Jackson street, at 4 o’clock this afternoon, by his pastor, Rev.
E.E. Branch, of the first Baptist church, where Mr. Broad was a faithful,
conscientious, and extremely regular worshipper and helper.

The remains will be taken to Pontiac on Tuesday morning, for interment in the
family lot where his parents are resting.

Some months ago Mr. Broad was appointed county agent for truant children, to
succeed J.H. Van Ness, deceased, a work for which he was most admirably suited,
and was making a most splendid record.
