Lived Here nearly 70 years Occupied Old Homestead for a Decade. Levi Broas, one of the oldest residents of the county, died at his home in Belding Sunday morning at six o’clock. Mr. Broas came here with his father from Ulster county, New York where he was born Dec. 31, 1821, and settling in Otisco township in 1837. The site of the city of Belding was located by Mr. Broas’ father and at this time there was no other dwelling between his and Ionia. The old farm has gradually diminished as the growth of Belding has increased until the four hundred acres located in the early day is covered by a thriving city and every church, home, factory or other structure erected there on has been a source of satisfaction to Mr. Broas and the people of the county, especially the older residents, to whom he was best known have always enjoyed his society, as he has their confidence, respect and esteem. While Mr. Broas carefully looked after his farming interests and enjoyed the comforts which rural life give to a lover of it, he found time to plan and perfect many improvements and to indulge his taxidermy and as one of the results thereof he leaves a large collection of birds, beasts and insects that have merited and received the complimentary attention of specialists in that line. Mr. Broas was married to Ruth Ann Just daughter of James Just, in August 1849, and their union now severed after fifty three years of constancy and perfect trust, was blessed by five children, four of whom survive him, his youngest daughter Jennie, departing this life at the age of nineteen years. The living children are Catherine Hill wife of Henry Hill of Orleans, Chas. Broas of Lansing, Belle Mann widow of E. O. Mann of Belding and J. Just Broas of Bay City, all of whom were assembled with their mother at the old homestead, bowed in sorrow at the parting and thankful to a kind providence who spared and prospered the loving husband and father throughout a long eventful life. The funeral took place Wednesday from the old homestead on the hill and was largely attended by relatives and friends, Rev. J. E. Butler conducted impressive funeral services and his earthly remains now rest in Belding cemetery near the scenes of his lifes labors. Mrs. Chas. Hill of Portland and her father Mr. Brownell sang appropriate and beautiful hymns. Among the relatives present from abroad were Just Broas and son and Mr. Weidick of Bay City, Chas. Broas and daughter of Lansing, Miss Frye of Howard City, Chas. Hill and wife and Mr. and Mrs. Brownell of Portland.
