Mr. Brockway was a laboring man, 79 years old, had never married, and made his home with a niece, Mrs. Ida Alvord, at 235 East Lincoln avenue. Saturday evening he started to walk over to the home of another niece, Mrs. Chauncey Christian, who lives a mile south of South Ionia. About 8 o’clock he reached the corners in South Ionia when an auto coming east on the river road confused the old man, and he dodged back and forth, making the situation worse. In the manouvers, the driver of the car states he could not understand the cause of Mr. Brockway’s confusion and the auto struck him before the occupants of the car realized what was happening. Dr. Johns was immediately summoned, and arrived at the scene of disaster about 8:30, and found the old man suffering from a number of injuries, and he was conveyed into the home of W.W. Crane where a careful examination was made. His skull was found to be fractured, his right leg below the knee also fractured, also his collarbone, and there were in all probability severe internal injuries. The fractured skull was the immediate cause of death and there was a very severe hemorrhage underneath the skull which caused a paralysis of the right side. As soon as possible Mr. Brockway was taken to the home of Mrs. Alvord, where he died about 11:15. The cause of the death was so plainly an accident for whom no one was to blame, declared Coroner Boynton this morning, that the matter was not investigated. Mr. Brockway was slightly deaf and blind in one eye and his confused movements made it impossible for the auto driver to tell which way he was going, according to the statements of the coroner and Sheriff Hoppough. The driver, Harry Engin of Jefferson street, was entirely exonerated from any blame in the unfortunate accident, said the authorities this morning. Mr. and Mrs. S.T. McCoy were passengers in the car, and relate the accident as Mr. Engin told it also, stated the coroner. ------------ Elisha W. Brockway was born in Palmayra, Lenawee county, Mich., on May 23, 1842, passed away July 3, 1920, at the home of his niece, Mrs. Ida Alvord, with whom he had made his home for 35 years. He was struck by an automobile, fatally injured, rendering him unconscious, dying three hours later. He was known to his many friends as “Uncle.” The funeral was held at the above residence on East Lincoln avenue, on Tuesday, July 6, at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Garrard, officiating. The singers were Mesdames Fox and Peck. Interment in the family lot at Highland Park.
