Ionia Standard – 19 August 1904
Nathaniel K. Brooks, one of the most familiar figures on our streets for many 
years, died on Friday afternoon, at the old homestead in Ronald, near the 
Ionia township line.

He was born in St. Lawrence County, N. Y., May 10, 1831, and came to this 
county in 1846 settling in Ronald.  He possessed the strong personal 
characteristics, which made the pioneers so potent a force, and which gave 
them the respect and confidence of the community.  He early joined the 
Disciples church, and for many years has been a consistent member of the 
Church of Christ at Ionia.

He had been seriously sick for many months, but had recently been better when 
exposure led to grip complications from which he was unable to rally.  The 
family were all present at time of his death.  He leaves a wife and three 
children:  D. Z. Brooks of Ionia, Mrs. J. H. Tibbists of Washington, and Mrs. 
L. P. Miller of Chicago.

The funeral service took place at the home Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. B. Taylor 
officiating.  There was a very large attendance including a number from the 
city, over 75 carriages following the remains to Highland Park, where 
interment took place.  The singing was by quartette:  Mrs. W. l. Peck, Miss 
Fanny Yates, Walter Winchell and Horace B. Peck.  There was an abundance of 
floral testimonials from sympathizing friends.  The bearers, selected from 
members of official board of church associated with decedent were:  Walter 
Winchell, Arthur White, Archie Anderson and Henry Robertson.
