Vaughn, rashly decided to sever the veil which conceals the future world from us and pass to the great unknown beyond, and she very successfully carried out her plan. She has not been here but a few months and has been working in the Palace Bakery, herself and mother occupying rooms in the Unger block. Friday night between nine and ten o’clock she began to be in great pain. Her mother and neighbors tried to relieve her but as she grew worse instead of better, Dr. Stanton was hastily summoned. He reached there at about a quarter after ten and immediately saw it was a case of strychnine poisoning. He done all that could be done but owing to the length of time that elapsed and the size of the dose which had been swallowed there was not chance. Drs. Dutt and Pinkham were also called and arrived later, but she died shortly after one o’clock, having previously suffered horrible agonies. Being questioned by Dr. Stanton she acknowledged that she took the dose about nine o’clock, with the intention of ending her existence, as she was too much discouraged to wish to live longer. She retained consciousness to the end, expressed no regret for her act only that she had not used other means which would have been less painful. A letter was found which she had just received from a gentleman friend in Pennsylvania, which was probably at least partly to blame for her melancholy. Justice Lapham investigated the case and decided that it was so plainly a case of suicide that a coroner’s inquest was unnecessary. She was about thirty-four years of age, had been married but separated from her husband for some time. She leaves a mother and one brother. The funeral services were held Monday and burial was in the Easton cemetery.
