Returning to his house Sunday morning after he had been attending to morning 
chores, J. C. Brooks, farmer living southeast of the city, found the body of 
his wife, Nellie, slumped in a closet of their home, with a bullet hole in her 
forehead. 

Mrs. Brooks had been in ill health for a number of years, but had never given 
any intimation of having in mind the taking of her own life, according to 
officers who were called in to the case.  Coroner Dale Kauffman of Ionia, who 
with Deputy Sheriff Ben Neve, had been called, stated that it was a case of 
suicide, Mrs. Brooks having left several notes, prepared for her family prior 
to going into the closet to end her life.

The death of Mrs. Brooks came as preparations were being made to observe the 
47th anniversary of her marriage to Mr. Brooks, later on in the day.  She was 
66 years old.

Surviving are the husband; three sons, Clarence of Fenwick, Asa, formerly of 
this city and now of Ionia, and Willis of Muir and a daughter, Mrs. Lester 
Bauer of Ionia.

The body was brought to this city by the Fsles-Huffman Funeral Home, where it 
was prepared for burial and on Monday afternoon it was taken back to the home, 
where funeral services, in charge of Fsles-Huffman, with Rev. A. J. Westmas, 
pastor of the Presbyterian church of Ionia, as officiating clergyman, were held 
on Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock.  Burial was in Easton township cemetery.

Pallbearers were Geo. Feuerstein, Guy Wilbur, Arthur Bradford, Noah Bishop, 
Ford Rowley and John Rasmussen.
