Nov. 30, 1950 William Brooks Dies After Long Illness William Fred Brooks, 72, Barry county farmer, passed away at his farm home southwest of town Friday morning after a long illness. He was born in Carlton township August 18, 1878, son of William and Margaret Hecht Brooks and married Mina Gerkey September 10, 1899. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year. The couple resided in Grand Rapids seventeen years, and Lowell ten years before returning to this area where they have resided on their farm on Fry Rd., for the last twenty-one years, a short distance from his boyhood home. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter Mrs. Lulu Hendee of Portland, three sisters Mrs. Clara Fawley of Clarksville, Mrs.Gary Studt and Mrs. Glenn Torrey of Lake Odessa, four brothers, John of Okemos, Charles of Woodland, Frank of Williamston and Dewey of Lake Odessa and six grandchildren. This is the third death in the family recently as his mother and a sister Mrs. Harry Thompson of Hastings preceded him about four weeks ago. Mr. Brooks was brought to the Pickens funeral home before being taken to the residence Friday afternoon. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 at the residence with burial in Portland cemetery, Rev. Lee Jenkins of the Grace Brethren church officiated.
